KWI Conduit

Volume VI, Number 1
Spring 1998

Editor's Note

With the publication of Volume VI, Number 1 the KWI Conduit completes two transitions:  1) my assumption of the editorship from John Mylroie and 2) the transition from print-based to web-based publication.  I would like to thank John for his guidance and assistance in producing this issue.  This issue represents the first time the Conduit has been published in an electronic web-based format from the onset.  Prior issues have been adapted to the web from the print-based editions.  I have taken this transition as an opportunity to change the look and feel of the Conduit.  My intentions were to make the Conduit easy to navigate and as interactive as possible.  I expect that based on future comments and suggestions that the Conduit will continue to evolve as valuable resource for the Karst Waters Institute, its mission, and the karst scientific community.

In addition, as many of you are now aware, an e-mail distribution list has been established to facilitate prompt notification of newly published issues.  In an effort to increase awareness about the KWI and its programs, an effort was made to include individuals from throughout the karst realm in this mailing list.  Hopefully, this will spark new interest and participation in the KWI as well as the Conduit.

The Spring 1998 issue contains a diverse array of articles, announcements, and updates.  Among these are notes about the recent Annual Meeting of the KWI Board of Directors, information about new karst-related publications, news about ongoing conservation projects, happenings in the karst scientific community, and updated information about upcoming conferences.  It seems appropriate to take a moment to make clear that as editor I will attempt to strive toward the KWI goal of increasing knowledge of karst water systems and to facilitate education of professionals and the public about the more efficient management of these resources.  As such, I will continue to assure that the Conduit remains a objective source of information about cave and karst conservation issues.

I look forward to a productive and rewarding term as editor of the KWI Conduit.  I encourage you not only to submit articles and announcements appropriate for the Conduit, but to also send any comments or suggestions regarding how this publication can be improved to meet the needs of the KWI and those associated with its mission.

                                                Best Regards,
                                                Toby Dogwiler
