Noted karst scientist and author Alfred Bogli died in February. Bogli published numerous scientific articles of speleological significance as well as a popular text book entitled 'Karst Hydrology and Physical Speleology'. His passing is a great loss to the karst community.
Additional information can be found at the Swiss Speleological Society ( http://www.speleo.ch/index_e.html) web page (German Language).
The National Park Service has begun publication of a new on-line newsletter
focusing on topics involving the karst resources of parks containing cave
and karst areas. The newsletter will be published quarterly and edited
by Dale Pate, the Cave Specialist at Carlsbad Caverns National Park.
The first issue of the newsletter has been posted on the web and may be
found at http://www.aqd.nps.gov/grd/geology/inside/index.htm.
The newsletter can also be obtained as a MS Word 8 or MS Word 6 file
by contacting Ron Kerbo (Ron_Kerbo@nps.gov)
via e-mail. Articles for the newsletter are solicited internally
from NPS personnel. Comments or questions about Inside Earth may
be submitted to Dale Pate (Dale_Pate@nps.gov).

The International Union of Speleology (UIS) and International Geography Union (IGU) joint Commission on Karst Hydrogeology and Speleogenesis begun publication of a new newsletter The Karst Conduit in April. The Karst Conduit is intended to be a medium of communication about the joint efforts of the IGU and UIS with the goal of making their plans and initiatives better known to the karst scientific community.
Besides covering the internal business of the Commission, the newsletter will serve as a forum for informal exchange of ideas about karst hydrogeology and speleogenesis, and will carry news about upcoming events, publications, and karst information resources.
The frequency of publication of The Karst Conduit will be in accordance with the amount of material submitted for the newsletter. Three to four issues a year are anticipated. John Gunn and Alexander Klimchouk will compile and distribute the newsletter. The Karst Conduit will be disseminated electronically as a MS Word document. The document may be obtained at http://rubens.its.unimelb.edu.au/~pgm/uis/khs.html. For more information contact John Gunn (j.gunn@hud.ac.uk) or Alexander Klimchouk (klim@klim.carrier.kiev.ua).
[Editor’s note: The Commision acknowledges that other organizations, particularly KWI, currently use the title ‘Conduit’ for their newsletter. However, they concluded that no other title accurately addresses both their scientific objectives and the function of the newsletter. As a result they have decided to entitle their newsletter "The Karst Conduit."]
