7th Conference on Limestone Hydrology and Fissured Media Announced

University of Franche-Comté
Besançon, France
20-22 September 2001

Since 1971, the Universities of Franche-Comté (Besançon) and Neuchâtel have alternated organizational responsibilities for various international conferences with the main purpose of promoting communication between researchers and engineers of water in karst and fissured media.  The most recent conference occurred in 1997 at la Chaux-de-Fonds (Switzerland), as one of the 6 scientific sessions of the International Congress of Speleology.  This 6th congress enabled publication of 84 articles from 24 countries which were reviewed by the 37 members of the Scientific Committee gathering scientists from 12 countries.

The conference will include two full day indoor sessions, with concurrent programs (20th and 21st  September 2000), and a one-day excursion on 22nd September 2000.  Official languages of the conference will be French and English, for  communications, posters, and articles.  There will not be any simultaneous translation of oral communications.  The 10th meeting of the European Action COST620 Vulnerability and Risk Mapping for the protection of Karst Aquifers will be held jointly at Neuchâtel.  Delegates and experts will be invited to participate in the different sessions.

Proposed topics of the Conference:

1. Data acquisition and underground measurements
2. Investigation and diagrammatization  of Epikarst
3. Numerical simulation of flow and transport processes
4. Dissolution and speleogenesis
5. Vulnerability of karst groundwater (definition et mapping)
6. Karst of the Jura massif (session dedicated to Pr. Pierre Chauve).

A one-day excursion in the karstic Jura massif is scheduled on 22nd September 2000. This excursion may be coupled with the excursion of the European Community COST 620 Action Vulnerability and Risk mapping in carbonate (karst) aquifers [F. Zwahlen, Neuchâtel].

The conference will take place in the buildings of the la Bouloie Campus of the university of Franche-Comté in Besançon. Besançon is located in the heart of the karstic Jura.  Besançon can be easily reached by TGV train from Paris, direct trains from Lille, Strasbourg, Port-Bou, Montpellier, Vintimille, Nice, Marseille, Lyon, Dijon.  By road, Besançon is situated on the A36. The travel time from Neuchâtel is 1h30 by the nice "microtechnics road".  Accommodation will be possible in the city's hotels, in the Centre International de Séjour, in the municipal campsite, or in the University Residences for students.

Registration Information:

The registration fee for the 7th conference (including coffee-breaks and proceedings) will be:

· Full amount: 100 Euros (656 French Francs),
· Students (with a copy of the student card): 50 Euros,
· Subscription for proceedings only: 35 Euros.

Further information, in the form of a second circular will be mailed to those who have pre-registered before 30th April 2000.

Evaporite Karst Session at Karst 2000 in Marmaris, Turkey

A total of 18 titles and abstracts were submitted for the Evaporite Karst (EK) session at Karst 2000 in Marmaris, Turkey, in September 2000.  The interest and response to the session call has been outstanding.  The titles, authors, and addresses are listed here.  Information about the symposium and EK session is available in the Second Circular that can be found at: www.karst.hacettepe.edu.tr

The papers will be presented during a one-day session during the symposium. Plans are being made to publish the papers of the EK Session, along with the other Karst 2000 papers, through UNESCO.  The UNESCO book will be a fine publication, and they would publish it as part of their Hydrology or Hydrogeology series at no cost to us or Karst 2000. Information about the format or length of papers is not yet available.

Yuan Daoxian and Ivo Karmann have convened a symposium entitled Processes of Karst Terrains (No. 20-6) during the 31st International Geological Congress which will be held 06-17 August 2000 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.  An IGCP 379 business meeting will be held during the conference in association with the symposium.  Those interested in participating in the session must submit abstracts before 01 October 1999.  Abstract submissions may be made through the conference's web site (http://www.31igc.org).  More information on the symposium can be obtained by e-mailing Yuan Daoxian (dxyuan@mailbox.gxnu.edu.cn) or Ivo Karmann (ikarmann@spider.usp.br).

1st International Conference on Sustainable Development in Karst Regions
24-27 August 2001
Beijing, China

The Geological Society of China and other scientific communities are planning the 'First International Conference on Sustainable Development in Karst Regions' in August 24-27, 2001, in Beijing, China.  The conference is being hosted by over twenty Chinese scientific organizations concerned with geology, geography, agriculture, environmental issues, etc.  Primary among these organizations are the Chinese Geological Society, the Chinese Geographical Society, the Chinese Geological Hazard Society, and the China International Conference Center for Science and Technology.

Discussions and presentations at the conference will deal with issues germane to the sustainable development of karst regions.  The topics will include:

Before and after the conference, a total of four field trips will be organized to investigate typical karst regions in the Guangxi
Zhuang Autonomous Region, the Guizhou Province, the Sichuan Province, and the Three Gorges of the Yangtze River.  Also included will be visits to related water power stations, thermal springs, some tourist caves, and examples of treatment strategies for some karst geological hazards.
