Conference Description

The Sixth Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst will be held April 6-9, 1997, in Springfield, Missouri. This meeting continues the highly successful series of interdisciplinary conferences begun by the Florida Sinkhole Research Institute and continued by P.E. LaMoreaux & Associates, Inc., in conjunction with various professional and educational organizations.

Geologists and geographers study how and where karst develops and how sinkholes form, but engineers must use this information to build structures. Communication and sharing of knowledge between the disciplines is achieved through an emphasis on practical applications and case studies. Civil or environmental engineers, geologists, planners, and government regulators who deal with water resources, waste disposal, foundations, or other geotechnical issues will all benefit from attending this conference.

Call for Papers

Technical papers and case studies are invited from engineers, geologists, hydrogeologists, and all interested parties dealing with applied science and engineering in karst terrane. International contributions are especially encouraged. Due to the interest in and success of the special session on Governmental Regulations and Permitting at the last conference, papers are being solicited for a similar session: Defining the Limits of a Sinkhole for Regulatory Purposes.

All papers for the conference are expected to deal with applied science and engineering. Papers dealing with more theoretical aspects of karst may be submitted for poster presentation. Other papers may be presented as poster displays at the author's request; this may be helpful to authors for whom English is not the primary language.

The Proceedings

The Proceedings volumes from the Multidisciplinary Sinkhole and Karst Engineering conferences have become
standard references on engineering geology in karst. Their popularity is demonstrated by the fact that the First Conference Proceedings have been out of print for many years. Each attendee will receive a professionally published copy of the proceedings at the conference--an aspect of this conference that has always been greatly appreciated.

Sinkhole on South Kansas Avenue in Springfield, Missouri.

Abstracts

An abstract of approximately 400 words MUST be received by SEPTEMBER 30, 1996. The abstract will be used to place the paper in the appropriate session but will not be the abstract submitted to the publisher. If more papers are received than the schedule can accommodate, this initial abstract will be used to determine which papers will be accepted. All abstracts, final papers, and presentations must be in English. However an abstract in another language may be included with the final manuscript.

Deadlines

Abstract Submission: Sept 30, 1996
Manuscript Submission: Dec. 2, 1996
Advance Registration: Mar 3, 1997

Manuscripts NOT received by December 1, 1996 without prior arrangement will be deleted from the program. Accommodations can be made in limited cases for SLIGHT extensions of deadlines. However, no guarantees of inclusion can be made regarding late manuscripts.

After the banquet head for the Bahamas with... Dr. John Mylroie!

It's easy to envy a colleague who has made a career out of lounging around tropical beaches. Dr. John Mylroie has done just that--specializing in karst systems and fresh-water lens on carbonate islands. He has published widely on such topics as Hydrodynamic behavior of caves formed in the fresh- water lens of carbonate islands; Geology of the Bahamas; and Water-rock interaction ... Geomorphic perspective and island karst.

Dr. John Mylroie, Island Karstrunner and infamous racontuer.

Many conference attendees have struggled for years to convince the uninitiated that karst is different. Now we learn that karst developed on young, near-coastal limestones is even different from traditional karst. As Keynote Speaker, Dr. Mylroie will review recent advances in our understanding of karst developed in young carbonates, and he will explain its practical implications ranging from the nature of contaminant transport to the origin of land collapse hazards. Following the banquet, he will share less formal anecdotes and reflections on his numerous exploits in his own inimitable style.

Dr. John Mylroie is currently Professor of Geology at Mississippi State University. He has also taught for several years in the University in the Park series at Mammoth Cave National Park; served as Program Chairman for the Fourth Symposium on the Geology of the Bahamas, and was the co-leader for the 28th International Geological Congress field trip to those islands. He was instrumental in founding, and served for five years as the president of, the Karst Waters Institute.

Field Trip

On Sunday, April 6, an optional field trip has been planned to permit participants to see and discuss the practical aspects of karst geology in the Springfield, Missouri area. Dr. Kenneth C. Thomson, professor of geology at Southwest Missouri State University and President of the Missouri Speleological Survey, Inc., will organize and lead the field trip.

Urban karst problems will be examined in the Springfield Plateau area, including the cities of Springfield, Nixa, and Ozark. Approximately 2,500 sinkholes have been located in the karst terrane in Greene County. Recent examples of groundwater contamination by sewage, fertilizers, and hydrocarbon chemicals have demonstrated the sensitivity of groundwater to degradation in this karst terrane. Shallow groundwater pollution, sinkhole flooding, and sinkhole subsidence and collapse are a few of the problems which participants will examine firsthand on this field trip.

Pre-registration and bus loading will begin at 7:30 A.M. Sunday morning, and buses will leave promptly at 8:00 A.M. Lunch will be provided. Participants should wear appropriate outdoor clothing and walking footwear and should be prepared for rain.

An additional fee of $95.00 is required for the field trip.

WANTED: SPONSORS (REWARD OFFERED!)

The organizers are soliciting sponsors for the several social events at the conference. Sponsors underwrite the cost of these events and their generous support is acknowledged both at the event and also more formally at the banquet. The sponsors are also acknowledged in the conference program.

All sponsors will receive a set of Proceedings Volumes from the current and previous conferences (five volumes in all, as the Proceedings Volume from the First Conference is out of print.) These volumes are excellent research tools and will be a significant addition to any corporate or personal library.

For the Welcome Social, we are soliciting two sponsors who would each support half the cost. We also are seeking sponsors for the pre-Banquet Wine Social and for the wine course to accompany the banquet. If you or your company is interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Dr. Barry F. Beck at (423) 483-7483.
