SP15: Select Field Guides to Cave and Karst Lands of the United States
This book is a alternative project for KWI, and a deviation from other Special Publications. The main goal of the book is to provide an educational ensemble of detailed, authoritative field guides for cave and karst areas of the United States. The book includes seven previously published, but updated, guides that were a part of earlier Special Publications (associated with KWI conferences). To broaden the scope of the book, five new and two other updated, previously published guides were written by associates of KWI. The guides predominately focus on the geology and hydrology of a specific region, but cultural history, biological diversity, and anthropogenic issues are also highlighted by some. Formal road or cave logs are included. The diverse assortment of guides should provide an entertaining mix of information for the reader, the traveler, and the explorer.

SP17: Carbon and Boundaries in Karst
This electronic publication is Special Publication 17 from the Karst Waters Institute, consisting of papers presented by invited speakers and other conference attendees. The focus of the meeting was on carbon (organic and inorganic) in karst and the technical sessions were organized to emphasize either a boundary or the processing of carbon: the upper boundary (surface/epikarst), the lower boundary (vadose/phreatic), lateral inputs and outputs, carbon (sources and quality), and microbial processes. For sessions that were organized into boundary zones, the presentations included research designed to advance our understanding of the physical, geochemical, and biological processes involved in the transport, transformation, and storage of various forms of carbon.

SP18: Hypogene Cave Morphologies
This electronic publication is Special Publication 18 from the Karst Waters Institute, consisting of selected papers and abstracts for the Hypogene Cave Morphologies symposium held February 2 – 7, 2014, on San Salvador Island, The Bahamas. The main thematic activities of the conference were to examine and discuss the unique cave morphologies and speleogens associated with hypogene caves, from the scale of 100 km+ cave maps down to centimeter size wall rock shapes and forms. Hypogene caves can be argued to represent a laminar flow regime that is quite different from the turbulent flow found in epigenic stream caves coupled to surface hydrology. Can these morphologies be uniquely characterized to identify hypogene caves? What effect do these laminar flow regimes have on geochemical models of dissolution drive in hypogene settings? Do flank margin caves fall in the hypogene flow environment?

From the preface:
Case studies have demonstrated that the movement of contaminants in karst aquifers is poorly, if at all, predictable. On one hand, contaminants may travel rapidly through the aquifer due to direct input, open pathways, and high flow velocities. In contrast, under other conditions, contaminants may be stored in the aquifer for long periods of time and gradually released at low concentrations. There have been a substantial number of studies of the movement of specific contaminants in specific aquifer locations – case studies – but much less consideration of more generalized concepts of contaminant injection, storage, transmission, and release. More importantly, much less attention has been given to the actual impact of contaminated karst aquifers on public health. Given the importance of karst aquifers as water resources worldwide, it behooves us to consider (1) how contaminant movement differs in karst aquifers and (2) what is the consequent threat to people who use these waters?
SP20: Carbonate Critical Zone Research Coordination Network Workshop Report
This Special Publication is from a virtual workshop organized by the Carbonate Critical Zone Research Coordination Network partnering with KWI. The report describes variations in Earth’s critical zone caused by varying carbonate mineral content, with karst landscapes an important endmember. It suggests that dedicated study of the carbonate critical zone will provide key information about critical zone processes. The workshop developed and tabulated 22 research questions for both natural and social sciences of important directions of study. These research questions align with five key research areas: boundaries and scales of critical zone environments, biological, chemical and physical processes at work, the rates and time frames of these processes, carbon dynamics in the critical zone, and the critical zone and society.
The workshop and publication were supported by the National Science Foundation Grant No. EAR-1905259. Any opinions, findings, and conclusions or recommendations expressed in this material are those of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the views of NSF.
